UAEM North American Conference

Interested in global health, patent law, health policy and advocacy, or
medicine? Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is a
student-led organization that works with experts in international medicine
access, campus technology transfer offices, and faculty members in order to
to increase access to lifesaving medicines and medical innovations
internationally and domestically. Our approach emphasizes pursuing system
wide policy and legal changes through research and targeted grassroots
advocacy.

*We will be hosting the 2016 UAEM North American Conference on our very own
campus from *
*October 15-16.*

   - The annual North American conference brings together medical, law, and
public health students and professionals from North America, Europe,
   Brazil, and around the world.
   - Thefocus of the conference is to inspire, educate, and mobilize both
new and experienced students to act on the access to medicines on campus
and outside the walls of their universities.

All students are welcome to join in our discussions and workshops by simply
signing up at this link:

Penn Vet PhD Program

Rabbits help lower cholesterol. Cats may lead to a breakthrough in the AIDS
epidemic. And dogs have taught doctors new heart surgery techniques. Even
lobsters help scientists understand Parkinson's disease. For over 100
years, animal research has helped wipe out such diseases as smallpox and
polio while increasing the human lifespan by 28 years. Whether it's
fighting epilepsy, finding a cure for Alzheimer's or making progress in
brain and spinal cord trauma, the link between human health and animal
health is absolutely crucial.

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine provides an
outstanding environment for the training of future veterinary scientists
through our combined VMD-PhD program. It's an excellent way for you to
continue your education while impacting the future of medicine for humans
and all species.

Who knows what today's research could do for future generations? Find out
more by visiting www.PennVetPhD.org

Bridging Berkeley Math Mentors

Work with middle schoolers who are behind in math to help them understand
the concepts behind the numbers. You'll work with the same few students for
the entire semester and will meet once a week with other mentors to compare
strategies and support each other. The middle schoolers are all
transitioning to Common Core math which relies on math models & flexible
thinking instead of scripted problem-solving, and most will be the first in
their families to attend college. If you are a creative thinker and ready to
ask a lot of questions (versus give one answer) then....

TLC Math & Science Tutors Needed
Are you smart and cool? Do you want to work in a fun, creative environment?
Do you have your own car?

Well-established tutoring center in Fairfax, Marin County, is currently
seeking sharp, energetic tutors who will be able to tutor from now until
the end of the upcoming school year, June 2017. Applicants should enjoy
working with children and teens in an upbeat academic environment. Tutors
should have patience, good leadership skills, and tolerance. The students
who will be tutored range in age from elementary to high school (3rd-12th
grades) and some adults.

The ideal candidate would be proficient in all of the following subject
matter: basic math (arithmetic), algebra, advanced algebra, geometry,
pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, physics, biology, and chemistry. We
understand that not all candidates can do all subjects perfectly, but those
wishing to apply should be well-reviewed in as many of the above subjects
as possible and have a good working knowledge before applying. All
candidates who are invited to an interview should expect to be tested to
determine their specific levels.

*EXTRAS: *Excellent written English language (essay writing) skills,
Spanish or French language ability, or SAT and ACT prep would be a plus.

*HOURS: *Tutoring takes place Monday -- Thursday in the after school hours
(approximately 2-9 PM), and on weekends (mostly Sundays). Those wishing to
apply should be able to work within these time frames (although not
necessarily for the entire window of time) for a minimum of three of these
days per week. These are only windows of availability of potential
students; tutors will set their own hours.

*OTHER INFO: *Those wishing to apply should have good study and
organizational skills, note-taking ability, and should also have a good
command of written English in an expository (essay) format.

Please be in an easy commuting distance to Fairfax (for example, the San
Jose, Fremont, or Palo Alto areas would NOT be considered an easy commute
distance) as punctuality is extremely important.

*TO APPLY: *Please email a cover letter and resume to the attention of the
director, Michael Zaleski, at: direc...@tlctutoring.org. Please include a
TELEPHONE NUMBER where you can be reached.
Volunteer Lab Assistant Position
The Genetic Epidemiology and Genomics Laboratory is looking for
undergraduate student(s) who are interested in gaining experience as a
laboratory assistant. This is a volunteer position.

The focus of the research laboratory is genetic, epigenetic and
environmental risk factor studies of autoimmune disorders including
multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The current projects are part of several well-established collaborations
including researchers at UC San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente Division of
Research, Oakland.

Laboratory assistants will assist with the receipt, inventory, and data
entry of biological samples, including peripheral blood, saliva, and other
biospecimens. They will assist with maintaining a large sample repository
comprised of samples from multiple investigators. They will assist with
additional routine laboratory responsibilities and perform literature and
other genetic/related database searches when needed.

There may be a possibility of advancement to learning/performing sample
aliquoting, DNA quantification, computer assisted barcoding/databasing for
biological specimens, DNA/RNA extractions, and other tasks based off of the
individual's performance/progress in the lab and/or prior experience in
another research lab (non-coursework related).

Laboratory assistants must be able to commit to at least 10 hours/week
during the academic year and maintain a regular schedule. Previous
experience in epidemiology as well as molecular and cell biology, human
genetics or equivalent laboratory-related coursework a real plus. Strong
computer skills desired. Previous experience in another molecular biology
or equivalent lab and ability to work over school breaks also a real plus.

If you are interested, please send cover letter and resume to
hqu...@genepi.berkeley.edu. Please include in the subject line:
