Helen Fellowship for Women

The Helen Fellowship is a unique opportunity for women to spend a year
immersed in teaching and research at AMNH in New York City. The Fellows
will split their time between teaching and a research residency within one
of the Museum's science divisions.

The Helen Fellows contribute to curriculum and teach within BridgeUp: STEM,
a computational science program for high-school aged young women and
middle-school aged boys and girls from New York City. Each Fellow also
conducts independent computational research under the guidance of a museum
scientist whose work aligns closely with the Fellow's interests and
experience.

Course work includes instruction in core theory, drawn from imaging
physics, engineering and mathematics and linked to physiology and disease
processes, providing a foundation in interdisciplinary scholarship. In
addition to introduction the fundamentals underlying image formation,
hands-on laboratory courses with experiments relevant for characterizing
pathologies, monitoring response to therapy and assessing hte underlying
mechanisms and etiologies, will be offered. Electives allow students to
customize the program to their interests, including the option to perform
independent research studies.

We have multiple internship openings at our research facility in Emeryville
for the current academic year. The internships are designed for upper
division students in molecular and cellular biology. Duties will include
construct design and cloning in E. coli, transfection and expression of
recombinant proteins in mammalian cell culture, preparing antigens for
immunization, evaluating different types of adjuvants, and monitoring
responses of immunized animals.

Interns are not required to have lab experience outside of coursework; this
is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced biotechnology
setting. You will be paired 1-on-1 with experienced PhD level industry
scientists for your training. Academic Year Internships are unpaid, and we
ask for a time commitment of 10-15 hours/week. Interns performing at a high
level may be considered for a paid Summer Internship, or possible
employment at the company.

If you are interested in being considered for an Academic Year Internship
