Align's  Faculty Speaker

Join us for Align's first Faculty Speaker of the year, on *10/27 at 6:30pm
in 55 Evans*!

In this talk Professor Nielsen will summarize his research on identifying
the genetic factors that have allowed humans to adapt to different
environments. One example is adaptation to high altitude, where humans in
Asia, Africa, and South America show evidence of independent adaptations to
oxygen deprivation. Another example is the adaptation of the Inuit, the
indigenous people in Greenland, to cold and to a diet based primarily on
fish and marine mammals. He will also discuss some of the computational
methods he uses to identify the variants underlying these adaptations.

Purpose of the position: The main goal of this position is to work with lab
members on projects to study the anatomical and functional connections
between areas in the bat brain related to communication and vocal learning.
The role will include preparing and analyzing brain tissue to identify
neuronal projections to/from higher cortical processing areas. This is a
great chance for a student to get in-depth exposure to the process of
laboratory science by working with real imaging data, developing wet lab
and microscopy skills, and understanding the connection between form and
function.

Preferred availability: Able to volunteer 15 or more hours of your time per

The MSBI program is aimed at students with Bachelors degrees, advanced
pre-doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, researchers and
faculty who wish to master biomedical imaging and research methods to
enhance their research designs and broaden their investigative projects.
The program can be completed in one year of full-time study or in two years
on a part-time schedule.

Course work includes instruction in core theory, drawn from imaging
physics, engineering and mathematics and linked to physiology and disease
processes, providing a foundation in interdisciplinary scholarship. In
addition to introduction the fundamentals underlying image formation,
hands-on laboratory courses with experiments relevant for characterizing
pathologies, monitoring response to therapy and assessing hte underlying
mechanisms and etiologies, will be offered. Electives allow students to
customize the program to their interests, including the option to perform
independent research studies.
Computational Biology and Bio Informatics Program at USC

The University of Southern California (USC) is an international leading
institution in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics for more than 30
years. Since Michael Waterman joined USC in 1982, the group has grown to
include 9 core faculty members, 9 affiliated professors, and more than 50
doctoral students and postdoctoral associates.
Our research is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), as well as private
foundations. From NIH we were awarded two Center of Excellence in Genome
Science (2003 and 2009), a Center for Disease Knowledge Base and
Coordination (2011), and a Center for Integrative Genome Structure Analysis
(2015).

Students in our program may choose from a broad set of research topics,
with the following areas receiving particular emphasis:
* Computational structural biology
* Quantitative genetics and evolutionary biology
* Genomics and epigenomics
* Network analytics
* Systems biology
* Metagenomics
* Sequence analysis, genome assembly and mapping
* Molecular and Brain imaging data analysis
* Molecular modeling and design
* Methodology for analyzing big data

During the initial semesters, training in statistics and computer science
provides our students with a robust foundation in data science. In their
dissertation research, students examine biological and biomedical questions
using quantitative approaches and develop novel methods for biological data
analysis.
Incoming students receive financial support for a minimum of five years.
Financial support includes a monthly stipend, paid tuition, and health
insurance coverage. Our graduates also have an exceptional placement rate,
with some opting for highly desirable industry positions, and others
continuing successfully in academia and research. Southern California is
one of the premier cultural hubs in the country, and we have nearly perfect
weather year round.

We hope you will consider applying to our Ph.D. program.
