MCB Department Survey: Defining Attributes, Essential Qualities and Identity We are currently exploring the possibility of updating the Molecular & Cell Biology Department logo. In order to generate design ideas, we would appreciate your help in letting us know what you think defines the department, or what are the essential attributes of the department. We have created a survey that is designed to collect your thoughts and the results will be used to inform the design process. The survey is also being sent to department faculty, graduate students, and postdocs, and the results will hopefully prove useful beyond the logo design. Infectious Disease VMD-PhD training Over 60% of all infectious diseases of animals can also affect humans, and incidences of new, emerging zoonotic infectious diseases are on the rise. Veterinarian-scientists, by virtue of their broad experience in multiple species and extensive training in both molecular and whole animal contexts, are uniquely qualified to address the complex problems presented in modern biomedical research. For over 40 years, the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine has provided an outstanding environment for the training of future veterinarian-scientists through its VMD-PhD Program. BASE Summer Program If you are free this summer, there is an opportunity to complement your degree with Haas's unique Summer Business Program. The Haas School of Business invites you to consider the BASE Summer Program (Business for Arts, Sciences and Engineering). BASE is a six-week business boot camp that enables non-business majors to take business courses while earning full academic credit. Some former BASE students have gone on to earn MBA degrees, while others have accepted jobs in marketing, product development, consulting, and financial services. The ideal participant of the BASE Program is an undergraduate student majoring in liberal arts, sciences or engineering. BASE is the only premier business summer program where students can earn units from a top university. Financial aid may be available. Many students are eligible for summer financial aid based on the 2016-2017 FAFSA submission. More details can be found at: http://financialaid.berkeley.edu/summer-aid Application Process We encourage you to apply as soon as possible given the popularity of the program in the past 19 years. There is no application fee. Our program focuses on exploring the biology of Atherosclerosis and Heart Failure using mouse models of dyslipidemia and diabetes. We recently reported an interplay between inflammation and recovery from cardiac failure, as well as microRNA-controlled immunity in atherosclerosis suppression that can be found in PubMed (PMID: 26322923 PMID: 25904598). Among our ongoing projects include a focus to explore macrophage-derived exosomes as vehicles of intercellular communication among cells of the immune system and vascular wall (PMID: 26320937 and 26320939). The positions will involve assisting with a broad range of in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate molecular and cellular aspects of inflammation, hematopoiesis and vascular tissue remodeling in mouse models of atherosclerosis, diabetes & heart failure. Our research program is highly collegial and opportunities will be available to co-author manuscripts and shadow surgeons in the operating theater.
