In particular, I have been studying the molecular mechanism of acute oxygen sensing in a chemosensory organ called the carotid body that senses decreases in blood oxygen to increase breathing within seconds. The carotid body is activated in conditions like high altitude, pregnancy, and exercise, and dysfunction of the carotid body is observed in diseases like sleep apnea, hypertension, and congestive heart failure. We recently published our finding that oxygen sensing in the carotid body is mediated by an olfactory receptor activated by lactate, suggesting that the carotid body senses decreases in oxygen indirectly through a metabolite produced in low oxygen (Chang et al., Nature, 2015). The ideal candidate will have 2 years of experimental research experience and familiarity with molecular biology, mammalian tissue culture, and/or mouse genetics. Willingness to work with mice is important, and a background in molecular and cellular physiology or neuroscience would be a plus. I am looking for a 2 year time commitment, and candidates ultimately interested in graduate school are particularly encouraged to apply. An independent project would be encouraged depending on the candidate's experience and ability to complete assigned lab duties. Interested candidates should send a cover letter and a CV containing previous research experience, GPA, and 3 references to: Andy Chang, Ph.D. andy.ch...@ucsf.edu Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator Description: The Department of Radiation Oncology is hiring two Assistant Clinical Research Coordinators to support the clinical research of several faculty physicians.
