We're looking at this Crestron mpc media presentation controller which supports rs232, dry contact and has a web management interface for programming and remote control. We'll be using this for a board room control and is less than $1000. http://www.crestron.com/resources/product_and_programming_resources/catalogs_and_brochures/online_catalog/default.asp?jump=1&model=MPC-M5
Alternatively we are implanting an open source gallery/digital interactive management system called nodel.io created by Museum Victoria in Australia. This has agents and options for controlling network connected, and through intermediary devices, control things like rs232 to power on and off computers, power on and off devices and projectors and achieve other levels of interactivity using free software and no cost to low cost devices and hardware.
