Susan,

We have used guided access at the IMA and have similar results. Sometimes
it stays in the app just fine, but if the app crashes or the iPod runs out
of battery it can get out of Guided Access. Another alternative is to use
Apple Configurator
(https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/apple-configurator/id434433123?mt=12),
this allows you to really lock down a device into a specific app. We have
found this to work much better at keeping the users out of other
functionality. Additionally you can use this to lock down the devices and
setup wifi and other device settings.
