Angela,

Pacific Asia Museum's digital initiatives originally came out of the
Collections department mainly due the Getty's Electronic Cataloguing
Initiative. In that time, the Curatorial, Education, and Marketing departments
were heavily involved in developing various content for the web. The museum
also had two great outside consultants: a web designer and a web/educational
content developer. Over the years, the Collections department produced an
online catalogue of its holdings and three web-based education modules.
Developing the modules involved the Curatorial, Collections, and Education
departments in order to better understand the museum's overall purpose for
creating these tools. The museum has no IT department, nor an on-site web
master. Instead, the museum chose to continue using the independent web
designer and web producer largely because of the positive feedback the museum
has received regarding its web site. The museum has recently shifted gears and
has moved some things around. Collections online will continue being the
responsibility of the Collections department and the education modules have now
become the responsibility of the Education department. I hope this is helpful.

Best of luck,
Julian Bermudez

Would anyone on the list be willing to share information regarding where your
Digital Projects/Digital Initiatives areas fit within your organizational
structure? We are trying to determine if content-producing areas (sometimes
called Digital Projects/Initiatives, Online Access, etc.) are typically housed
within the IT department, collection/curatorial department, or elsewhere. Are
there any institutions that have content-based web departments outside of IT?

Your help is greatly appreciated!
