Hi Sarah This is the advice from our multimedia department Differing approaches can be used depending on the material the objects is made out of. And some materials are almost impossible to shoot without reflection.
1. A very diffuse light source. 2. Matt black walls in the studio. 3. Polarise the lens of the camera 4. Cross Polarise the light source 5. Shoot in a light tent http://www.fotogenic.com.au/product-photography-lighting-packages-kits/product-lighting-tent-cube/ Cheers Emma -----Original Message----- From: mcn-l-boun...@mcn.edu [mailto:mcn-l-boun...@mcn.edu] On Behalf Of mcn-l-requ...@mcn.edu Sent: Wednesday, 3 February 2016 11:00 PM To: mcn-l@mcn.edu Subject: mcn-l Digest, Vol 126, Issue 3 Send mcn-l mailing list submissions to mcn-l@mcn.edu To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://mcn.edu/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to mcn-l-requ...@mcn.edu You can reach the person managing the list at mcn-l-ow...@mcn.edu When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of mcn-l digest..." If you are planning on attending the workshop, now is the time to secure your registration. If you?re unsure about the significance of developing visual literacy skills, consider that we are increasingly surrounded by images in our daily lives. Learning to look and articulate our observations about the visual world helps us to better think critically about what we see, and to impart that knowledge to others. This workshop is open to image management professionals, image users, and the broader information and educational community, and is designed to both develop visual literacy skills and empower the participants to help develop those skills in their students and patrons. It is an opportunity not to be missed! *Visual Literacy: Learning to Look and Looking to Learn* will be held at University of California Berkeley on February 26th, 2016, one of two workshops being offered in the first year of the VRAF Regional Workshop Program. The VRAF is grateful to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for their generous support of this new opportunity. Part one of this workshop will focus on visual literacy skills and pedagogical approaches by exploring objects at the new Berkeley Art Museum. In part two of the workshop, participants will discuss and develop ways to implement their own visual literacy program at their institutions, and learn how staff, students and faculty can use digital archives, art objects, and other primary sources in developing visual literacy skills. Instructor *Visual Literacy: Learning to Look and Looking to Learn* will be taught by Jessica Sack, the Jan and Frederick Mayer Senior Associate Curator of Public Education at the Yale University Art Gallery. During her fifteen years in the field of museum education, Jessica has developed training programs in visual literacy for information professionals, teachers, faculty, and students. Registration The fee for the workshop is $75 for either the morning or afternoon session, or $125 for the full day. The camera then looks into the tent to photograph the object, and you site your lights outside the walls of the tent. It creates a very even soft lighting effect, all over the object, and removes the reflections and harsh 'catchlight' reflections that you see without such a facility. Studio photographers making images of jewellery use light tents a lot. You can also construct your own temporary version using some bulldog clips and fine muslin or cotton. Here's some commercial versions: http://www.photogeeks.co.uk/light-tent-kits/ All the best Jon Jon Pratty, FRSA Creative Digital Producer 07739 287392 @jon_pratty Chair, Brighton Digital Festival CIC <http://brightondigitalfestival.co.uk/> Creative Network Programmer, Ideas Test <http://ideastest.co.uk/> Associate Director, Tech Resort CIC <http://techresorteb.com/> Associate Director, People in IT Ltd <http://www.peopleinit.org.uk/> On Tue, Feb 2, 2016 at 8:58 PM, Sarah Gillis <sarahgil...@worcesterart.org> wrote: > This query is for all of the photographers on the list-serv! > > We are in the process of capturing new photography of some Greek vases > which recently underwent conservation treatment. I think you'll get some good responses from MCN folks, and maybe someone nearby can pay a visit. For publication quality, I really think you'll need some experienced professional help to, at the very least, consult with you on lighting and color management. Also, reflections can be creatively controlled with a combination of Photoshop use and basic lighting techniques. Do you have a good Photoshop tech there?
