That's right, plastic is more susceptible, but the reason for using plastic
for a lens is because it isn't made to make contact with the medium. It
focuses the laser beam and gets a beam back - all without making physical
contact.

Why use forged pistons in a motor when it only pushes a force that even a
standard cast piston can handle? It's all about fitness for purpose and
plastic lenses are just that.

Wouldn't plastic be more susceptible to being scratched than glass?  Why
else (besides cost) would they use a material that could render the unit
useless if it's scratched?
