Jim, Aiwa seems to have been very supportive of the MD format for some time now.
There so called "mini systems" which consist of a fairly large center piece (which
is the heart of their units) and various numbers of speakers (depending upon how
much you spend) have had both a TOSlink output and a button to chose MD as the
source of music.
These units have been on sale in the US market for at least 3 years that I know of.
You can probably find these features on units selling for as low as $200 (USD).
Although known for their "cheap" units. In recent times Aiwa has been packing a
great deal of quality into their systems and their MD portables are as good as any
body else's.
If I am not mistaken, a few dozen years ago Aiwa was known for their high end reel
to reel tape decks. Then they decided to pull out of the US market. The history of
consumer electronics is a very interesting one. Fisher used to be the gold of home
Hi Fi. As a boy I dreamed of the time when I could own one.
Buy the time that I could afford one, they had been sold and became a company know
for their cheap crap. In a way that is kind of sad.
But to get back to Aiwa, their mid priced "mini systems", while possibly not being
true Hi Fi, are often better then what you hear in you car.
G'day,
Larry
