Selecting different frequency rates on sound cards just does the same as the
converter on the MD. The only difference is it is on the card at the output stage
as opposed to the input stage on the MD. The mixer on the cards mix at 48kHz -
having selectable output just runs this through a sample rate converter on the
card after mixing - no different to taking the 48kHz output and plugging into the
MD.

No, I borrowed one and decided not to get one because it had no facility to add
digital input.

Yes it would, although if digital input is so critical to you because you demand
that much sound quality, I would advise you to stop fussing with "cheap 'n'
cheerful" cards and go for a professional grade sound card.
