I recently purchased the 4DWave NX from Hoontech.

a) It comes with an optical and coaxial digital line-out as well
as an analog line-out. Note that it doesn't have a "speaker out"
(same as the Live! I think).

b) Open Source (!) drivers for Linux are available (by the ALSA
project) that, unlike the Live! drivers, are well out of the
"might or might not work" stage. The digital out works after a
little handwaving. I don't know if the wavetable synthesizer works
under Linux, I'm currently too lazy to find out.

c) I'm not a golden-eared boy, so I can't comment on that, but
I didn't hear anything I didn't like yet. The wavetable sets are
probably not world-class, but then again this isn't a Yamaha board.
I also can't comment on the 3D features, since I only have 2
speakers/didn't play any shooters lately.

The price: $46 ! (list price)

d) Not directly related to the card, but nice nevertheless:
xmms has a builtin option to insert an arbitrary pause after each
song to produce track marks. In Winamp you have to do this manually
or use the pause plug-in, which is buggy.

Regards,
Alexander
