Apart from the portable bit, this is exactlky why I bought a Minidisc
machine.

Here in the UK, Radio 3 broadcasts a steady stream of live recordings, some
of which I also attend in person.(On Saturday they broadcast a Gluck opera I
went to last month, and they are supposed to be recording tonight's
performance of Rinado at the Barbican for later broadcast.) I wanted an
easier way to record than with tapes.

Minidisc turns out to be the perfect solution. I have yet to come across an
work that hasacts or kmomevement of more than 74 minutes. They evenb split
up last night's broadcast of Britten's War requiem with some poems in the
middle giving me the vchance to slip in anogher disc.

The problem with a portable, I gather, is that you cannot get it to deliver
an optical output. No problem for most people, probably, but I wouldn't mind
the ability to make decent second copies of Minidiscs, or CDs via a PC.
(That particularproblem seems to be one that only the anoraks can hack with
any confidence.)

I suspect that the ideal solution is to have a decent deck AND a portable.
Which is probably where I will end up one day.
