I use a 4.5V charger with my MT-821 (bought it in Japan, Australia uses
240V). Works fine. The difference is that while the 5V one will charge
while the MD is playing, at 4.5V it won't. It charges when switched off
though.
The reason they have to support 4.5V is that it's easily stepped down to
from 12V as used in cars. Read the spec sheet of your MD to see if it
supports 4.5V. They seem to accept more than one voltage.
