While I’m sorry for your troubles with this, I’m glad to know I wasn’t the
only one with this issue! Valuable information! I’ll see if I can
incorporate this workaround or something similar.

Very much appreciated!

We had this issue in our environment. It turns out that the USB root hub
does not install during the deployment even though the drivers are in the
repository. I was able to rectify the issue by simply creating an
application that installs those drivers and inserting a task in the task
sequence to run the application based on the Model variable equaling
Optiplex 3040.

Our application package simply calls a cmd file that scripts a copying of
the driver files locally to a folder via xcopy and then runs the following
command,

*pnputil -a "PathToDrivers\iusb3hub.inf"*

We had to do similar with the Latitude 7x70 series on the RootHub, WiGig,
and WLAN drivers.

I tried looking through the HDD as a slave drive on a different machine to
parse the BDD.log file with Trace32. It didn't report any errors, as
indicated by the successful deployment window.

I ended up just removing the USB3.0 drivers from the driver folder for that
particular model, reran the MDT deployment, and it successfully completed
the deployment, only this time, with working USB mouse and keyboard. Of
course, Device Manager was reporting that a USB Controller driver was
missing and couldn’t find one on its own with the help of Windows Update.

I grabbed the drivers from Dell's website, which, to clarify, were for the
Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, version 4.0.4.51.

I had issues with this driver using version 4.0.4.42 (I think), and the

4.0.4.51 from Intel's website.

For now, I'll just inform my desktop deployment team to install these
drivers post MDT deployment for this model.

Need some more debugging information here.

Can you plug in new USB devices? Are only upgraded devices affected? What
about new?

Are there any errors in the Device Manager?

You say that it affects all ports, but are you sure there are any usb 2.0
only ports, if you are not sure, then try a USB 2.0 hub.

Check the panther logs and driver install logs for any problems.

Honestly, for USB controllers, I would be surprised if you needed 3rd party
drivers, especially for a OEM like Dell, inbox drivers should be enough.

Subject: [MDT-OSD] Optiplex 3040 - Dead USBs Post Deployment?

Hey all,

My desktop deployment team at a remote office has been having an issue with
a Optiplex 3040 after being run through MDT. It makes it through the
deployment and receives the window from MDT indicating a successful
deployment, but, it appears the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. LED's
on the keyboard "lock" buttons are unlit, and do not change status when
pressing the corresponding "lock" keys. Optical laser on the mouse's
underside is also unlit. And this seems to affect not only USB 3.0 ports,
but all USB ports.

Despite this, the mouse and keyboard seem completely functional in the BIOS
and other bootable media on the same machine.

I have my deployment share's drivers separated by OS & architecture,
manufacturer, and model. I figured this had something to do with the USB
drivers or a chipset driver of some sort, so I tried grabbing updated
drivers from intel's website, installed the drivers onto a spare 3040 that
has an OEM version of Windows 7 on it, used Double Driver to extract those
USB drivers, deleted the USB drivers that came from the Dell .cab file from
our Optiplex 3040 driver folder on the deployment share, and imported the
new Intel drivers to that same folder. However, I still seem to be having
the same issue.

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be happening in this scenario?

Thanks,
