"Hanya butuh 225 gram abu dari jasad seseorang yang dikasihi menjadi permata," kata Dean VandenBiesen, wakil presiden LifeGem, perusahaan yang mengubah abu menjadi permata. Dikatakan VandenBiesen, abu kremasi memiliki cukup karbon untuk membuat 20 butir permata, dan masih tersisa beberapa gram lagi untuk dijadikan hiasan di sekitarnya. Tapi sejauh ini, tidak ada yang minta pembuatan lebih dari 11 permata dari sisa orang yang dicintai. LifeGem menggunakan oven super panas untuk mengubah abu menjadi grafit. Grafit itu kemudian diberi tekanan tinggi sehingga berubah menjadi permata-permata berwarna biru dan kuning yang harganya mencapai 2.700 hingga 20.000 dollar AS (27 juta hingga 200 juta). Kebanyakan orang kemudian menjadikan permata-permata itu sebagai cincin atau liontin untuk mengenang orang terdekat mereka. "Memang tidak setiap orang tertarik," kata VandenBiesen.
