This list is a source for conference announcements and job opportunities
in journalism education positions, but looking through the archives
carefully, this list has public archives, one finds news reports and
information sources that are quite valuable. My post immediately before
this one about intemperate communication by a government attorney with a
journalism professor was the result of seeing the link to this article
posted by the list moderator Elliott Parker on this publically archived
list.

Archives for this list extend all the way back to January 1999, so there
is quite a collection of posts to explore for valuable resources, and any
older ones that are no longer at the URL specified, if an internet site
may be found some of the time archived at Internet Archive through a
search of the URL for the site on that source or at a new location through
a search of Google by source title in quotation marks. Drop the quotation
marks for a rather substantative source title in Google and one may find
some excellent alternative resources.

Elliott Parker, a member of the journalism faculty, can talk about the use
of online and other Internet resources in covering news. He is an
authority on the history and uses of the Internet. He is the founder of
CARR-L, an online computer-assisted reporting discussion group with more
than 5,000 journalists from 61 countries. He can discuss current issues
related to the Internet.
In general, keep as information resources, publically archived discussion
groups as there are many out there on a large variety of servers that are
gold mines of quality information sources. Yahoo Groups and Google
Groups are two of a number of concentrated centers for such resources.
George Lessard, whose posts are seen on Net-Gold, has, in addition to his
Yahoo Groups archive an archive on the Mail Archive, another server with a
major collection of discussion groups.

[SOURCE: Los Angeles Times, AUTHOR: Editorial Staff]
[Commentary]
IN THE LATEST illustration of the Bush administration's
disregard for your privacy, the Justice Department
is trying to convince a panel of federal judges that
the FBI should be free to read your e-mail without
obtaining a warrant. It's not all your e-mail --
only messages left on a Web-based system such as
Hotmail or on your Internet service provider's
computers.
A 1986 law forbids the interception and disclosure
of e-mail and other online transmissions without a
warrant. But there is an exception. If the messages
are more than 180 days old, they can be obtained
merely with a subpoena or a court order, which
investigators can obtain more easily than a warrant.
The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals should rein
in the feds and strike down the provisions of the
law that are out of sync with the technological
realities of the broadband era -- and the privacy
expectations of Americans.

John Seigenthaler Sr. is not a man who would ever want to damage the
freedom of speech or the free press guaranteed in our Constitution.
In fact, Seigenthaler -- a near legend among newspaper editors of a
certain age -- is the founder of the First Amendment Center and one of our
country's most eloquent advocates for both those freedoms and the
responsibilities they carry with them.
So I was pretty impressed when he called me in response to an editorial we
published Monday about a California Supreme Court ruling in late November
that basically reaffirms a controversial section of the Communications
Decency Act of 1996.
In the editorial, we expressed deep concern about the double standard that
now exists between the legal standard for libel facing print and broadcast
journalists and the unregulated -- and unaccountable -- world of the
Internet.
In thanking the Herald-Republic editorial board for weighing in on the
side of responsibility, the 79-year-old Seigenthaler told me the story of
how he came to be something of a poster child for the dangers of a
freewheeling online world that operates essentially free of journalistic
accountability.
Seigenthaler -- whose name may sound familiar because his son and namesake
is an anchor on "NBC Nightly News" -- is a former president of the
American Society of Newspaper Editors and, for 43 years, was editor and
eventually publisher and CEO of Nashville's award-winning newspaper, The
Tennessean. In 1982, he became the founding editorial director of USA
Today, and held that position while retaining his duties in Nashville. He
retired from both USA Today and The Tennessean in 1991.
In what hardly could be called his retirement years, Seigenthaler is a
senior advisory trustee of the Freedom Forum and chairs the annual
"Profile in Courage Award" selection committee of the John F. Kennedy
Library Foundation. He also co-chairs, with Arthur Schlesinger Jr., the
Robert F. Kennedy Book Award for the RFK Memorial. He served on the
18-member National Commission on Federal Election Reform organized in 2001
by former Presidents Carter and Ford and is a member of the Constitution
Project on Liberty and Security, created after the Sept. 11, 2001,
tragedies in New York and Washington, D.C.
So imagine his surprise in September 2005 when he discovered that on
Wikipedia, the popular free online encyclopedia, his biography included
none of that impressive information.
Instead, he was described as someone who "was thought to have been
directly involved in the Kennedy assassinations of both John, and his
brother, Bobby. ... (He) moved to the Soviet Union in 1971, and returned
to the United States in 1984."

Study Recommends Fix to Digital Disconnect in US Education and Workforce
Training: Features of Video and Computer Games Teach Skills in Demand by
Present-Day Employers
EurekAlert
<http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2006-10/foas-srf101306.php>
Groundbreaking recommendations calling on government, educators, and
business' to develop comprehensive strategies to use video games to
strengthen U.S. education and workforce training will be released at a
press briefing today, the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) and
Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced.
The action plan identifies steps that the federal government, industry and
education community can take to develop a comprehensive strategy to take
advantage of the features of video games to address the increasing demand
for high quality education and training, and commercialize educational
games to help students and workers attain globally competitive skills in
demand by employers.
"Many recent reports warning about declining U.S. competitiveness point to
an urgent need to improve workforce skills and our system of education,"
said Henry Kelly, FAS President. "Video games are engaging and can teach
higher order skills, and they are especially attractive to today's young
digital natives who have grown up with digital technology. This plan
outlines concrete actions we can take to put powerful tools for teaching
and learning in the hands of educators and students at a time when the
need for education improvement is great."
America's position in the world is increasingly dependent on its standing
in the technological field. Summit participants agreed that features of
video and computer games can make learning more effective and accessible
by teaching players higher-order learning skills such as strategic
thinking, interpretative analysis, problem solving, plan formulation and
execution, and adaptation to rapid change all skills very much in demand
from present day employers.
"These findings communicate what we in the video game industry have known
for years that video games can make a significant contribution to
educating our kids, enriching learning, and to preparing the workforce
required for the high tech digital economy of today and tomorrow," said
Doug Lowenstein, president of the ESA, the trade group representing U.S.
computer and video games. "Video games are more than just great
entertainment, they're having a positive impact on kids and adults alike
in fields from education to health care, from the military to the
workplace.

The Digital Disconnect: The widening gap between Internet-savvy students
and their schools
8/14/2002 | Report |
Doug Levin, Sousan Arafeh, Amanda Lenhart, Lee Rainie
<http://www.pewinternet.org/report_display.asp?r=67>
Using the Internet is the norm for todays youth. Due in large part to high
profile and sometime controversial education technology public policy
initiatives, it is conventional wisdom that much of this use occurs in
schools. The American Institutes for Research was commissioned by the Pew
Internet & American Life Project to conduct a qualitative study of the
attitudes and behaviors of Internet-using public middle and high school
students drawn from across the country. The study is based primarily on
information gathered from 14 gender-balanced, racially diverse focus
groups of 136 students, drawn from 36 different schools.
Internet-savvy students rely on the Internet to help them do their
schoolwork. They describe dozens of different education-related uses of
the Internet. Virtually all use the Internet to do research to help them
write papers or complete class work or homework assignments. The students
employ five different metaphors to explain how they use the Internet for
school: The Internet as virtual textbook and reference library, as virtual
tutor and study shortcut, as virtual study group, as virtual guidance
counselor, and the Internet as virtual locker, backpack, and notebook.
Many schools and teachers have not yet recognized much less responded to
the new ways students communicate and access information over the
Internet. Students report that there is a substantial disconnect between
how they use the Internet for school and how they use the Internet during
the school day and under teacher direction. For the most part, students
educational use of the Internet occurs outside of the school day, outside
of the school building, outside the direction of their teachers. While
there are a variety of pressures, concerns, and outright challenges in
providing Internet access to teachers and students at school, students
perceive this disconnect to be the result of school administrators setting
the tone for use at school, the wide variation in teacher policies
regarding Internet use in and for class and poor and uninspiring quality
of Internet-based assignments. Students say they face several roadblocks
when it comes to using the Internet at schools. In many cases, these
roadblocks discourage them from using the Internet as much, or as
creatively, as they would like. They note that quality of access,
heavy-handed filtering and the inequalities in home access among students
constitute major barriers to Internet use in and for school.
