We have been using the OR Module for scheduling and charting since March
1999. There are many advantages and disadvantages but I want you to know
some of the nurses complain about the computer charting but when the
computer goes down (which isn't often), they get really upset as it
really is much easier. One thing that I like about it is that we have
captured a lot of charges with this system. Also, it seemed like it was
causing problems at first until we realized that what it was doing was
pointing out problems that we didn't know existed. We can go all the way
back to 1999 and find out information at our desk top. The reports are
great. I would suggest that if you went this way, that any nurses that
are not computer literate should have some classes just on computer
first. The biggest problem that we encountered was with those who were
afraid of computers. I love the look-ups as much information is
available just by using the look-up function key and choosing a number.
The information just falls in. Also, they have canned text, where you
can program routine comments and using the "get" function key, have it
all typed for you by the computer. You do need extra help in the OR
rooms for the nurses when they start as there is a learning curve and
they can not circulate as efficiently as they usually do when they are
just starting on the computer. Also, even after the module is built, you
need someone to maintain it, troubleshoot and teach. Our hospital
originally let the nurse that built the system go and we really
struggled for some time until we got an OR director who recognized the
importance of having someone responsible. That is probably more
information than you were looking for but if you have anymore questions,
I would be happy to answer them, gayle

We recently went live with the ORM module. There are more screens to
manipulate, but once you get used to it, I don't think it's that bad.
There are CDSs that can be created to make it a little easier. We are
currently using it for Scheduling and for all OR cases. It is better
than the old system we had (Array).

We have created OR database in the Meditech ABS Module in PROJECT. We
are using for Daily OR surgery log and for other Reports. If you have
any question please call me.

Hi,
I work at the Division level for HCA and I currently support 14
hospitals that use the Meditech OR Magic software. Having worked on
other vendors' OR software in the past, I had a good grasp of what was
needed when we went forward with this project.

I will not lie to you and tell you that it is perfect. There are some
parts of the software that I still find kind of frustrating, but the
integration with other Meditech modules allows us great flexibility. We
utilize attributes in our CDS's that bring NUR history and physical and
assessment data defaulted into our OR documentation screens, we default
HCT values from LAB into a cellsaver screen. These are all wonderful
things that help the clinician and that we wouldn't have available if we
used an outside vendor. We also can do cross module reporting and that
helps immensely for Risk and QA management.

So, yeah of course there are drawbacks, but I think that in the larger
picture, we get much more from our Meditech OR system.

Sincerely,
Mary deVarona-Garrido
