Ditto for Pharmacist that specialize in Informatics - as clinicians, we need the tools and resources to drive results in the IT world. Kevin McConnell, PharmD. By default the Informatics Nurse deals with clinical/computer issues. If they cannot be trusted to have clinical access how would they be able to deal with any clinical issues? In fact, many times the Informatics nurse might have to emulate someone to gain further understanding on a specific issue. I end up printing clinical documentation that our HIM has problems with. Clinical/Computer issues cannot be dealt with by simply working in TEST. It is not a HIPPA violation for the Informatics nurse to access various patient's data in LIVE any more than it is for HIM, Coders, Nurse Managers, Quality/Risk, etc. Again, the key would be in the job description. If your job description includes some of those clinical issues then you should be OK to have that access. However, someone who is mainly hardware support would have no defensible reason for being in anyone's chart. If your informatics nurse reports to a department other than IT does she still have access to this information? thanks for all information.
