Hi Bob,
What we did to keep nursing from accessing
meds from Pyxis that we want to dispense from the pharmacy (like ½ tabs,
etc) was to create new drug mneumonic with an “*” in front of the
description. This allows you to enter the order keeping the INV set to
main…it then crosses over to pyxis/profile but nurses cannot access med
because Pyxis does not recognize the mneumonic. This is a lot more work,
especially if you run a perpetual inventory like we do, but it does work.

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] Fractional
Tablet Dosing in Meditech/Pyxis
I am having a problem with Meditech allowing nurses to
access doses of medications when I don't want them to. As a policy, we
don't allow nursing to split tablets (for non-controlled substances). If
the patient requires a fractional tablet, it is prepared in the pharmacy and
sent to the patient's room. My problem is that if the whole table is
available in the Pyxis dispensing machine, Meditech will ignore the fact that I
have set the Inventory to Main and allows the
nurse to pull a full tablet out of the machine. Does anybody have a
solution that blocks the nurse from having access to a medication in their
Pyxis machine if it is a fractional dose?
I
also have a problem on the opposite side. For controlled substances we do
allow the nurses to split tablets, but when the nurse pulls up the medication
on the Pyxis screen, it tells her to pull out 1 tablet, even if the dose is
only a half tab dose. The appropriate strength is displayed on the screen,
but when the nurse sees 1 tablet, that is what she pulls out and administers. I
know that this is more a Pyxis question than Meditech, but I though somebody
might have some insights for me. How can I get Pyxis to display
fractional units for dispensing?
