Title: Message
We have had this issue in the past where the patient was transferred but the transferring nurse still needed to finish up her documentation; the majority of our users are restricted by location. This made the nurse go to the location where the patient was currently located in order to finish her documentation. We are currently Magic 5.5 SR 3 and were able to set our parameter to 12 hours after discharge in MIS. This works great as long as the transferring nurse finishes her documentation before she leaves for the day.

As regards printing, we print to the patient's current location and have set up printers in the location dictionary so it doesn't matter where the nurse is documenting from, it still goes to the printer where the patient is located. We do have mobile computers which are primarily either on our M/S units or CCU and they are set up in the location dictionary to all three locations. Therefore, even if a nurse is restricted by location, she still could access any patient at these three locations but cannot access other patients (ED, Rehab, Maternity, etc.) unless transferred off one of these three units in the past twelve hours.

I hope this is helpful.

I just read in the TEST5.5 sr 2 dts that there is a new parameter called Access Prev Pt Loc _ Hrs After Xfer.

this was create in MIS rto allow users temporary access to a patient's prior location. The number entered
in this paramter represents the number of hours during which a patient can be accesssed by both the
transferrring and receiveing locations.

there is also new field added to the MIS facility dictionary for same thing. This one overrides the Access
Prev Pt Loc .
The dts is CS MIS 4344.

I think this will make it a lot easier. I guess we will see what happens.

It was a big problem at our facility so all nursing except Skilled Nursing Unit, Obstetrics and Nursery have access to all locations.  Skilled Nursing, OB and Nursery are "separate" in that they don't have transfers in from other units so they are restricted to accessing only their specific locations.  I would atleast look into the documentation issue with nursing before implementing.  Better now than later!

We also did not restrict our "mobile carts" to location because they may get moved to another location as "temporary replacement loaner" if a unit has a mobile cart "go down".

If the patient hasnt been transfered in the system yet, it shouldnt be a problem. We arent live yet with these

changes. We hope to have the documentation done before the patient is transfered in the system. Otherwise

the nurse would have to go to go to the new patient location and use one of the computers there.

Is not getting the documentation done before patient leaves the floor a big problem we should look for ?

What about patient transfers.  If the patient transfers to a location that the nurse does not have access to and she has not completed her documentation, how will does the "transfer from" nurse access the patient record to complete documentation?  Have you run into these issues yet?

We havent started restricting our nurses by location yet , but we will
be. We just started using the
Thin clients also .
Its my understanding the printing process looks at the client your using
for the printers, not the
Server.

If you restrict by location , you shouldn't have a problem if your
client being used is in the
Location dictionary in the same location as the patient being worked on.
If the patient is on 4 East,
For example, but the laptop being used is in the dictionary as being on
3 East, then the system
wont let the nurse in if she/he is restricted by location. It basically
means only let the user
See the patients that are on same location as this computer.

If the client is in 4 East location dictionary and the patient is there
too, then there wont be an issue.
We have problems here with mobile laptops that staff move to different
floors , but don't tell the IS
Dept, and I am worried that it will be a problem because the dictionary
wont be updated .
The nurses will get frustrated because they don't have any idea that the
computer isnt set up for
That location.

Let us know how it works out for you.

We would like to use Thin Clients for our NUR applications which will be
connecting via Citrix servers.

When you restrict nurses by location how do you control Printing for
(HERE) type of Reqs for both NUR and OE?

How do you control access for the nurses since all PC are managed in the
Location dictionary ?

Best way to go about this?

Thanks,
