Brian,
Regarding moving the scanner from room to room: Even though it is
wireless, it is "paired" to the base of the computer in the other room.
It would be unwieldy to attempt to use the same scanner with another
computer.

Regarding waking the patient up: In my humble opinion it is not best
practice to slip into a room and administer meds to the patient without
waking them up. Part of ID'ing the patient is to compare what you see
on the arm band with what they say, i.e. their name, DOB or whatever.
The computer is a double check, not the only way of ID'ing the patient.
If you killed a patient in their sleep with the wrong med, would it be
an acceptable defense that there was a computer glitch and it read the
wrong RFID chip and allowed me to give that med???

Subject: [MEDITECH-L] BMV and wireles scanners

I think I've seen this question before, but not the reply:

For those of you using wireless scanners: Does the nurse carry one from
room to room, or is each scanner "restricted" to one PC?

If the nurse carries one from room to room, what happens if two nurses
are in two (nearby) rooms, each trying to document at the same time?

A second question for all BMV users:

Do you have to wake the patient up to scan the wrist band, when
administering IV meds (main line, IVPB, pushes, etc.)? Has anyone found
an inexpensive scanner that reads barcodes and RFID (RFID for the
patient, and barcodes for the meds)?

Thanks,

Brian
