1) We use a wireless scanner attached to a PC or COW, depending on the patient location. The cradle it sits in is tethered to the computer, but the scanner itself is removed from the cradle and will work several feet away from the computer. Typically the nurses are not that far away from the computer when scanning because they need to see the computer screen. The scanner only works with the computer the cradle is tethered to. 2) We scan the wristband at night to give IV drugs. Our wristbands have 2 barcodes on them, so we don't always have to wake the patient if their arm is uncovered.
