I'm all for using yum, however I remember references to other tools, iirc zypper. Can you shed some light on the package management tools of choice? In the same line, has there been any discussion regarding PackageKit as the package management platform? Probably it isn't very compelling as the package format (i.e. RPM) is finalized.
