Sure, and zypper is exciting & fast :-) it deals with patterns thus:
sudo zypper search -t pattern
see what you like the look of, then eg.
sudo zypper install pattern:development-tools
sudo zypper install pattern:x-software-development

Seriously; if there are known problems, please file the bugs, CC me,
and we'll have a bash at them; in the meantime, zypper seems to work
very slickly for me on MeeGo and our enterprise & community distros -
but this is perhaps the localised Meeks reality distortion field at
work ;-)

Interesting; I had not noticed those features myself; though - now you
mention them they seem somewhat unfortunate; I've poked Richard on the
topic. Is your concern primarily writing proprietary application
installers (why?) ? or is it adding PackageKit hooks & integration to
proprietary applications that may be split into pieces & want to request
pieces of themselves ? (fair enough).
