So,

I had added the following to dbus:

gconftool-2  -t string -s > 
/apps/geoclue/master/org.freedesktop.Geoclue.GPSDevice /dev/gps0
(where gps0 is a symlink to my usb gps device)

I used qdbusviewer (which is from qt-devel-tools, for future googlers) to look 
at what was saved,
but I didn't find any reference to geoclue or gypsy.  I also saw no signs of a 
gypsy service
running.  BTW: the navit mailing list and irc channel are pretty quite :{

But one step at a time, I'll just work on getting gypsy working (with any 
assistance greatly 
appreciated)...
