Something like this may happen when the server modifies the item while importing the data from the client. An additional wrinkle is that Google never really deletes your data when deleting them via SyncML, they just become invisible. When recognizing a contact (presumably via name and additional attributes), the hidden contact is resurrected. To really clean the Google side of sync, use the script which we use in the nightly SyncEvolution testing.
