xfdesktop needs to run to maintain the desktop, but, that's optional. It
does paint icons on the desktop - it's not meant to work with meego's
clutter implementation.

you DID start only xfwm4 right? not the entire xfce4 desktop plus gnome
stuff that your distro enabled to start by default as well?
