Dave,
        I have just rebuilt Z18ET.  There shouldn't be  much play in the chain 
unless the guides have moved or the tensioner has stuck in or popped out or
fallen off the block ( oil pressure may indicate this).
        Pete.( i think you'll have to pull off the timing cover.)
