Graeme,
Yeah, that's what I thought. I would have been stoked if I didn't have to
fit one, although I've already done the filler neck and "Unleaded Fuel Only"
crap anyhoo.
A friend of mine has had his SR20T powered car fully engineered here and he
had to use a cat.
I rang an engineer today - he reckons it will be over $1000 to get it done.
$1500 if they want a chassis stiffness test done! That's before I even get
to the Motor Transport bastards. No wonder so many people are driving around
on the sly here!!!

Pete,
I have just spoken to the RTA and the engineer that will be certifying my
car and the news is bad.
Apparently, early FJ's ran on leaded fuel, so as a general rule, they are
exempt from emission controls in pre'72 cars.
As the SR20 is recognisable as a locally available engine, that runs on
unleaded, a cat, narrowed filler hole and notation of "unleaded fuel only"
is the minimum requirement. You were right Pete...... Damn it!!!!! I
will have to locate a good size catalytic converter now, or at least to get
it engineered with it in place.
Graeme.
I wish this were true - in SA you have to have a cat - they work it on the
emissions laws for the engine being fitted - not the car it is going into.
If it is an unleaded engine you have to have a cat. Maybe I could just
remove the O2 sensor and tell them that my '94 SR20 was designed to run on
super!

Have the rules changes recently?
I was of the impression that 1600's were exempt from the need to have a cat
converter, being pre '72
