What's the engine doing, like is it missing or is this just a tacho problem?
Try another coil, it sounds like you could have voltage drop across the primary
to secondary windings under load. Also have you checked whether or not you are
using the correct coil i.e. if ballast resister in you are using a coil that is
specked to be used with one or vice a versa. If the coil checks out the next
place i'd look is the condenser but a faulty one usually breaks down in 3rd gear
as well, so i'm optimistic that's the problem - but i've been wrong before.
Condensers are funny things to diagnose, there is no defined pattern of
behaviour with them when they fail.
I've seen this problem before on one of my cars - have you got a factory tach
(the one with the 2 white wires plumbed in parallel with the +ve coil wire) If
so that little block near the back of the tach could be about to die and then
you stop altogether as the coil doesn't get any power and it's not easy to
figure why.
