If the tach drops to nothing and the engine dies at the same time then your
coil isn't doing it's thing.

- just wondering if the fuel mixture was really rich there and the plugs
couldn't fire whether the coil not discharging would stop the tach ? bit
unlikely maybe.
Have you pulled a plug lead and tested for spark at those rpm, hooked up a
timing light or a dwell meter ?
