Luke,
Sounds like the 180B SSS has the usual Nissan idea of wiring a tacho in
series with the 12v coil wire that goes from the ignition switch to the
ballast resister. To test it undo the 12v input to the BR and run it to your
tacho and then back to the BR from the other wire from the tacho. That way
you'll know which way the current goes through the tacho.
I haven't got a 180B wiring diagram to look up the colour code but you need
to know which of the 2 ignition wires from the switch is the constant feed
to the BR as the other one supplies 12v on start. You need to tap into the
constant feeder.
Also if these tachos are a bit old they can blow the sensing coil and your
engine cuts out for what appears to be no apparent reason - it happened to
me in my 1200 Coupe at 6000 rpm on the wrong side of the road many years ago
and after a change of underwear it took a fair while to figure the problem.
regards
Terry

Subject: tacho questions
list,
I recently purchased a SSS dashboard cluster for my 180B. I am having
problems with the wiring as my model was not a SSS. I have the power
wiring sorted but there is a wire that runs right through the tach which
is black with a blue stripe. It has 2 spade connections on it, different
one on each end. Now the wire runs through a metal ring and is near a
coil.
My thoughts are that a voltage/current is needed to pass through the
wire and that current will induce a voltage in the coil near it and
subsequently work the tacho.
Is this correct?
Also where do i hook the wires to??? The negative of the coil and then
to earth??
All SSS tacho's should be the same so could someone have a look and get
back to me.
cheers
Luke (180B) Heymans
