Tom,
It is
safe to vent the outlet from the rocker cover to atmo, by law you must fit a
baffled filter which are available from most speed accessory
shops.
Can't
answer the second question re SU's as I don't use and don't like em but for
webers it makes a huge difference and I imagine that any side draft would
benefit from tuning the intake to a varying degree. If you go from a restrictive
air cleaner to a more efficient one remember to re-tune your mixtures as the
immediate effect will be to run lean which is expensive if not
corrected
