Justin,
If your radiator hasn't been serviced in the past 5 years or so it's
probably blocked, a reverse flush may help a bit and when you flush the
radiator remember to always open the heater tap and flush the heater core,
it's amazing how much crap get caught in them - btw the heater on a 1600
sucks through so reverse direction is up the long hose and out the horse
shoe. There is no short term risk of damage with the thermostat out at this
time of year but run with your heater off to get up to temp a bit quicker
and don't flog it until it's warm as your oil will take longer to warm up as
well. Ideally your temp gauge should be above the minimum mark near the "T"
to avoid engine wear.
How hot is hot, you wont hurt a L engine until your past the "P" , typically
thermostats jam open so your temp should run lower with a shot one - if it's
running hot especially if when going up hill the radiator is blocked or the
water pump is shot.

Ozdatters,
Can anyone see any bad reasons why I cant take out my thermostat?
The car is getting hot, not boiling, and it has to go to the engineers
Monday morning. 1600l-series, basically stock. I havent got time to get a
new one and the old one is 20yrs old at least. The rest of the system seems
fine. Its the only thing I havent replaced.
Thanx
Justin
