Don't forget that in removing the thermostat the thermal equilibrium between
cylinder walls will change. Number One will be running cold whilst number
four will be at running temperatures. This means number one bore will not
expand at the same rate as number one piston, and therefore will wear out a
lot quicker.
I know because I have been caught out this way!

You'll probably find that the thermostat may be jammed anyway, so I'd take
it out if I were you. Only thing you risk is letting it run too cold! You'd
get away with it till march anyhow!
