Nick,
I mark the backing plate with the axle in position by scribing a line
around the periphery of the housing end! I then cut the backing plate along
that line. This leaves the axle retainer section of the backing plate and a
plain axle. The R31 disc sits straight onto the studs and is held in place
with two wheel nuts. The R31 caliper still bolted to the support bracket is
placed over the disc and when in position with the caliper bleed hole at
the top most point of the caliper the mounting bracket is welded into
position on the axle housing after a bit of shaping and cutting.
Voila! R 31 Heavy duty disc brake rear end. Good for 400 hp no probs with
the thick axles! To make it better with less unsprung weight use a 4,625
alloy carrier differential and the whole rear only weighs 5 kg more than a
standard stanza rear end!

Errol,
I have located 4 (!) Gazelle rear ends at Moore Spares in Campbelltown
(they are a Nissan specialist and seemed very knowledgeable and helpful -
If anyone in Sydney is reading this).
I do not want to run the drum brakes at all, because they have been exposed
to the elements and have been roughly handled.
They told me that there is a thick and a thin axle Gazelle.
We pulled apart a HE37? and a HE38? axle code Gazelle, but both were thick
axles - SERIOUSLY thick, nice one Errol!
They said that the R31 swap probably wouldn't work and that the best bet
would be to run the small axle spec. centre with TRX axles and discs.
I had a look at a R31 disc setup while I was there and can see no reason
why it won't work, maybe the threads or offsets don't match or something.
I would like to pay the small amt. extra and get thick axles and R31 discs,
rather than break up my good TRX assembly and have to worry about axle
breakage.
What are your recommendations - do I need R31 axles? or will it all go
together no worries?
Did you do the R31 disc brake conversion to the Gazelle-Stanza that you
mentioned?

PS Those Gazelles would make a good base for a Turbo 2 Litre conversion -
rear wheel drive, 2-door hatch, swoopy aero styling, pop-up headlights,
vented front discs, but essentially a good ol' datto underneath.
