Pete,
That will cause each of them to move independently of each other but I read
that the problem was both gauges swinging in unison with one another.

This happens in my 180b as well, but I think that the reason the fuel gauge
moves could be because the float level in the fuel tank changes when you go
around a corner? As for the shifting temp gauge, mine used to do that all
the time, so I checked the thermostat an that seems to have fixed it, you
may want to check the gauge itself, coolant/water levels, and your water
pump...
