That is great that you can sorce VG30 pistons like that. I am still going
to stick with forged slugs as they are just more reliable for my setup. My
engine will be racing and rallying so it will be required to handle a large
range of temperatures and sever rev changes, as well as cope with high
compression. Ceramic coating is a good idea, and if you talk to the boys
right they may also do your extractors which makes quite a difference.

By the way I couldn't really afford the head either but I wasn't going to
let the chance slip by this time!

Keep me posted

Brad,
I posted Lindsay Siebler at Pistons auto parts in Vic
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> regarding the oversize VG30 pistons and his
reply is below.

Hi Craig
300 zx pistons are avail in 1.00mm They have a flat top with 2 offset
valve
reliefs. Are circlip type with 21.00mm pin and crown height is 32.00mm.
They will cost you with chrome rings $299.00 incl gst
            Lindsay

While I agree they won't be as good as forgies they're probably the next
best thing. I was considering having the piston tops ceramic coated
aswell, which would reduce crown temps by approx 7% for added
reliability. For $299 they are a lot cheaper. Just depends what you want
to use them for. The forgies would suit your application better I agree.
I'm after something a little milder. I can't afford an FIA head! :(
I don't see a high CR being the problem as long as there is no major
detonation present, which results in huge cylinder pressure increases. I
consider high temperature at the crown and top ring land caused by
detonation, lean mixtures or inadequate cooling/lubrication more likely
the cause of failures. I thought of using an oil spray for under the
piston crown aswell as an option, not sure though. I've also thought
about running fairly tight piston to head tolerances to limit combustion
to a modified peanut chamber, which should reduce temps at the top ring
land and reduce combustion time.
I welcome any thoughts.

Craig.
