Ryan,
I'll assume you have everything back together i.e. rockers, dizzy and timing
cover are all installed. If this is not the case let me know what is
installed.
You should always do this check after a cam chain has been removed and
re-installed on any OHC engine, otherwise you get instant tears if you
attempt to start the engine and you've got this wrong as the valves will hit
a piston.
To check a cam for the correct installation position (also a check for cam
timing and chain stretch)
1. Rotate engine to TDC compression stroke on #1. If the timing cover is not
install, then the key on the crank will be facing straight up. The cam lobes
on #1 will both be facing upwards and the dizzy rotor will be pointing
towards #1 plug lead, usually to the front of the cap if the oil pump drive
is installed in the correct position.
If the dizzy is not installed then the drive tongue will be offset towards
the front of the car. The ends of the tongue will be facing just behind the
dizzy retaining bolt hole in the timing cover on the engine rocker cover
side and just in front of the other bolt hole which is on the passenger
guard side.
3. Rotate the crank 2 turns and very slowly bring the engine back to TDC
compression on #1. If the engine will do this step then the valve timing is
pretty close, but it still can be out one tooth either way. The next step
checks that it's spot on.
4. Check that the "V" notch in the cam sprocket aligns with the indent on
the cam thrust plate. You look through the hole in the sprocket that's about
at 11:30.
5. It may not be an absolutely perfect match but anything less than 1/16"
either way is OK, but if it's out more than that then get back to me and let
me know how far and which way the V notch is out and what the number is
that's on the sprocket where the cam dowel is located (1, 2 or 3).

I recently put the head back on my L18, however in doing so the cam came
out. I am now unsure if it is in the correct position. How do you know the
correct position for the cam?
