I've done the "fill it with water and then weld it" trick. I just filled it as far as I could while just leaving the area that I needed to weld. That was on an Escort tank. I'm still here.
 
I like the idea of using degreaser/detergent on it several times first though.

G'day List, what is the safest way to weld another portion of metal onto a petrol tank ?  Some ideas I have are to steam clean the tank, or fill it with water while welding etc..  Ideas/suggestions ?  I want to live until another day....
