It is some sort of HF leakage that they detect.
The coppers also use impounded detectors and modify them so that they detect
other radar detectors of the same model.
Apparently the mid and far north coast of NSW is the danger zone for
detection, i.e the high-tech anti-radar detection is centred there.
But as long as you are not there a bit of 'evening up the odds' shouldn't go
noticed.
It is most unfair in Victoria where the cops drive around in all sorts of
unmarked cars.

Most people these days don't know of / don't practice this valuable
technique.
