Remember the Zed was designed when the Japanese where still roaming the
world copying the best engineering designs then applying it in their modern
manufacturing assembly plants.
A 1600 body is a pretty close copy of a 1965 BMW1600/2002 underneath the
skin, even down to the dimensions of the brakes.   Looking up at one
underneath on a hoist its hard to tell which is which.
I have also always believed the L series was an improved copy of a Merc
design.
