Ok, here's what the guys in our Datsun club in Arizona consider to be true:

The 510 (1600) body was designed by the same guy that designed the later BMW
3 series cars. This is very feasable being as the cars look VERY much alike,
4 headlights, same sillouette.........

The 510's undercarriage was a copy of a BMW desing, the 2002. The suspension
of these two cars are very much alike.

The L-engines are a copy of the Mercedes engines of the time.

The Japanese were (are) very good imitators. They take a good design, make a
few changes, and come out with an even better product. As for Pininfarina,
they didn't design the body, or anything else on the 510 (1600) as far as we
know. I have heard about them helping on the 411 though, but probably not.
