Steve,
I've had a few ideas about springs and coilovers,
but I have'nt made up my mind yet. From what I've been told,
Kings springs are the go, avoid Pedders. I'm going for about
2" lower or possibly more (but my house is surrounded by big
speedhumps). I would really like to do coilovers, but this depends
on my bank account at the time. Apparently there are 2 different
diameters in the 280ZX struts and according to the American website.
It is easier to get inserts for the 2" diameter ones apparently.
These are the ones I have. You also have to remove the spring perch off
the 510 struts and reweld them onto the 280ZX ones, this change is well
documented. One guy on the web just slipped some unthreaded
2" ID pipe onto his 280ZX struts to set the perch height and had spares of
differing lengths that he could slide on to change ride height. Sounds a bit
dodgey to me, but hell cheaper than threaded coil overs. Another guy just
got
some 2" exhaust clamp U bolts, removed the saddles from four of them and
then
used 2 each side of the car with straight-through bolts to set the ride
height.
This also sounds dodgey to me but I'm no suspension expert. Any way you go,
you just can't change the ride hide dramatically on a daily basis because
you
need to get the camber etc adjusted each time, necessitating a complete
wheel
alignment every time.
Most popular inserts seem to be Koni's, KYB andTokico (Tokico Illumina 5 way
adjustable inserts were found in a pair of 280ZX coil over converted struts
by [EMAIL PROTECTED]).
Lowering the car apparently means the control arm mounting points
on the engine crossmember may need to be lower. At what lowered height
this becomes an issue, I don't know, but if you can get a hold of a
1969 510 crossmember, then those control arm pivot points are already lower.
There is an article I got off the web called;
"280ZX BRAKES STOP YOUR 510 ON A DIME
Four-wheel disk brake swap
Article, photographs and drawings by Dean Sherman and Kelvin Dietz"
but I can't remember where it came from. Another issue is the different
camber angle of the 280ZX struts. I'm gonna try some 180B offset strut
tops which might solve that. I am still going through the options so I'll
keep you posted. Maybe some of the other listers might have some tips?
Let me know how you go and what it cost if possible.
Cheers,
Rob
