Cameron,
Alloy flywheel with ring gear is 4.3 kg. Total weight with 7" competition
clutch & pressure plate comes in at 6.8 kg.
The flywheel is made to stock thicknesses and can be reduced considerably at
the outer edge if required. The mass is still left at this level to ensure
adequate heat soak capacity from the clutch.
By the time you get most cast flywheels down to these weight reliability can
be lost as there is often not enough thickness in the section to give the
flywheels any safety factor.
I have seen clutch plates made from copper plated steel discs to reduce
inertia and they work for a very short time before they warp. Its all about
what you want to do and how much you want to pay to do it.
Cheers

Subject: Re: Flywheels!?!?
Well there are a few other things to consider with weight and thats the
weight of the pressure plate as well .. those weights of the alloy and jap
performance Flywheels don`t include the ring gear so you can add aprox 1kg
extra for that .. also when you are lighten a std flywheel there is far more
gain from taking the weight from the outside to improve engine response .. I
was looking at buying a alloy flywheel for a toyota motor but managed to
get the same weight with a lighten std fly wheel and the LIGHTER Smaller
pressure plate ..buy putting a smaller pressure plate with more clamping
pressure , you bring your weight closer to the center which is a gain in
response without even removing weight .. also because it is smaller you can
lighten the flywheel safely on the out diameter more . when i did this to
the toyota flywheel I ended up with the Flywheel inc ringgear and clutch
pressure plate and clutch plate with a TOTAL Weight of 9 kgs .. So the big
picture is the complete clutch and flywheel weight .. Regards Cameron
