Trev,

Interesting article by the Volvo bloke - it explains many things and
confirmed my observations about Optimax after using it for a while now.
Notice he refers to the different fuel blends by their makeup and not their
commercial names except for Avgas - still wasn't hard to identify LRP and he
didn't have any good things to say about it.

"Since the requirement for octane in spark ignition cars is inversely
proportional to altitude and temperature"

>From my experience with high compression engines this is so true and I'm
sure the fuel blends in Aus are messed about with the same as in the US, the
oil companies are in the business of making max money after all and who
gives a toss if a 30 yo Datto engine blows up because of it. It's only a
couple of RON numbers and who's going to notice? We do unfortunately. I
would say that Sydney Optimax is a couple of RON numbers down on Canberra,
I'd love to have the gear to do a comparison.

regards
Terry (may have to look at a wilder cam and an dial in 4 degrees more valve
timing me thinks to see what that does)

Terry and Andrew,

Methol Benzine?
methol benzyne?
Is this what BP are calling it?
AFAIK Methyl Benzene and Toluene are the same thing.
Most octane boosters used to use Methylcyclopentadienyl Manganese
Tricarbonyl (MMT) but I think this now illegal for road use.

This link has some basics on fuel and octane ratings etc

This one is something new to me it deals with optimising fuels physical
properties. http://www.gtatech.com/news_au_articl.html

Terry,
Yeh methol benzyne is another name for toluene.I think that the bp 100 uses
extra lead to get there octane like avgas.I use ultimate98 with 25 percent
toluene when i run high boost which gives you around 102-104 octane.I have
also
run C16 but would need a different turbo to get the full benefit (117
octane).
