Ryan and I checked with an autmotive engineer a few weeks ago and have posted
these once before, but here tis again for the South Australians.

This engineer checks to make sure the car is generally neat and tidy, and it
must also have passed a full Regency (roadworthy) inspection.  The car must
then pass a chassis torsional rigidity test then a brake fade test.  

They test rigidity with a beam and weights, and the minumum allowable flex is
around 5500N/degree.  For a 30 year old car you need a pretty reasonable shell
(or a decent legal cage I suppose) to get this (read: rust is bad)

The brake fade test is 15 stops from 60km/hr pulling at least 0.5G and then 2
stops from 100km/hr pulling at least 0.8G- traditionally this was carried out
on a racetrack (big dollars to hire!) but the engineer we spoke to said since
the speed would be legal on an open road you just have to find one quiet
enough.  Craig Williams' (Maddat) Mazda 4 spot/11" Vented upgrade has passed
easily, to give you an idea what calibre brakes you need.

I don't think it's easier than the eastern states because afaik they can
approve a transplant on principle&inspection now, whereas we still have to do
road tests.  Not sure about that one though..
