Adam,
The R31 spring is wider than the 1600 spring. Therefore the strut top and the spring platform is to wider as well. It is to wide to fit in the place of the narrow 1600 spring. You have two options- 1/ cut the spring platform of and replace with 1600 platform, 2/place R31 disc and caliper on R30 or Bluebird(?) strut (less work).
I once had R30 struts with R30 ventilated brakes on my car. They were O.K, but I then replaced them with 200B units with comp pads and they broke HARD!! I would drive my 1600 up and down Mt. Buller twice a week and never experienced brake fade. The mountain road goes from 300m to 1550m in 16 km, so it had a steep gradient!!!!
Where abouts in Townsville do you live? I used to live there 97/98, but moved because it was to far from the snow, plus the sticky heat of the wet season was unbearable!!!!!!!!
